Arsenal won the 2023 Community Shield after defeating Manchester City in a match at Wembley Stadium, England, on Sunday evening (August 6, 2023) WIB. After a 1-1 draw in normal time, the Gunners won the penalty shootout 4-1 against the Citizens.
Initially, Man City took a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Cole Palmer in the 77th minute. Then, Arsenal equalized to 1-1 through a goal from Leandro Trossard in injury time, in the 90+11th minute.
The determination of the winner was continued to a penalty shootout. Five Arsenal penalty takers successfully scored against Man City: Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka, and Fabio Vieira.
Arsenal's goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, also managed to save two shots from Man City players, Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri Hernandez. Only one Man City player successfully scored a penalty against Arsenal, Bernardo Silva.
The victory over Man City added a new Community Shield title for Arsenal. The Gunners now have 17 Community Shield titles.
Arsenal is behind Manchester United, which has 21 titles and is the English football club with the most Community Shield titles in history.
Meanwhile, this is Man City's second consecutive defeat in the Community Shield. Last season, the Citizens also failed to become champions after losing 1-3 to Liverpool. However, Man City has won the Community Shield 6 times.
The Community Shield is the opening match before the English Premier League, pitting the previous season's Premier League and FA Cup winners. However, because Man City won the treble last season, Arsenal, as the Premier League runner-up, was chosen as their opponent.
