Pecco Bagnaia Tops the Provisional Standings After the 2023 Portuguese MotoGP

Francesco Bagnaia won the first MotoGP race of the year at the Algarve Circuit in Portimao, Portugal, on Sunday, March 26, 2023. The reigning MotoGP champion not only won the main race but also the sprint race held on Saturday, March 25, 2023.

The sprint race is a new addition to MotoGP this year; a shorter race than the main event, covering half the number of laps. Riders earn additional points towards the championship standings.

Pecco – Bagnaia's nickname – earned 12 points from the sprint race and 25 from the main race. As a result, the Ducati Lenovo rider leads the 2023 MotoGP standings with 37 points.

Maverick Viñales is in second place with 25 points. In the sprint race, the Aprilia Racing rider finished fifth, earning 5 points, and he was the runner-up in the main race, adding 20 points.

Marco Bezzecchi is third in the standings after the Portuguese MotoGP with 16 points, followed by Johann Zarco in fourth with 15 points.

Fabio Quartararo is tenth in the standings with 8 points. He finished tenth in the sprint race and eighth in the main race.

Marc Marquez is not in the top ten. He collided with Miguel Oliveira during the Portuguese MotoGP.
