Erling Haaland has surged to the top of the Champions League 2022-2023 top scorer list after the Manchester City striker scored five goals against RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday (15/3/2023).
Haaland's goals secured a 7-0 victory for Manchester City over RB Leipzig. The Citizens advanced to the quarter-finals with an 8-1 aggregate score.
Haaland scored his five goals in the 22nd (penalty), 24th, 45+2nd, 53rd, and 57th minutes. Ilkay Guendogan (49th minute) and Kevin De Bruyne (90+2nd minute) scored Manchester City's other two goals. Haaland's five-goal haul in a single Champions League match equals the record set by Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano.
Messi scored five goals for Barcelona in their 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. Luiz Adriano achieved the feat for Shakhtar Donetsk in their 7-0 victory over BATE Borisov in 2014.
His five goals against RB Leipzig bring Haaland's Champions League total to 10 goals in six appearances. The 22-year-old striker has overtaken Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, who is in second place with 8 goals.
Kylian Mbappé is in third place with 7 goals, but he can no longer add to his tally as Paris Saint-Germain has been eliminated.
Below Mbappé are Joao Mario (Benfica) and Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid), each with six goals. Both players have the chance to increase their goal count as Benfica and Real Madrid have qualified for the quarter-finals.
