36.57% of Elderly People Still Lived in Unfit Housing in 2020

Data from the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that 63.43% of the elderly population (elderly) lived in decent housing in 2020. However, 36.57% of the elderly still lived in inadequate housing.

Based on the region, 68.44% of the elderly in urban areas lived in decent housing. This percentage is higher than that of the elderly in rural areas who lived in decent housing, which was 57.8%.

Meanwhile, 42.2% of the elderly in rural areas lived in inadequate housing. This figure is higher than that of the elderly in urban areas who lived in inadequate housing, which was 31.56%.

According to age group, the oldest elderly (age 80+) had the highest percentage living in inadequate housing, at 39.79%. Yet, the older the elderly, the more they need a safe and comfortable home because they are more prone to health problems.

For information, the criteria for decent housing include four indicators: sufficient floor area per capita, building durability (roof, floor, and walls), access to clean water, and access to adequate sanitation.
