Residents of the Apartment Building are Mostly from Islamic Boarding Schools and the Police Force

The government builds apartment buildings for various segments of society. The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) notes that the majority of apartment building occupants are from Islamic boarding schools (ponpes) and the police/Indonesian National Army (TNI).

Specifically, as of September 25, 2020, 31% of beneficiaries were from Islamic boarding schools and 20% from the police/TNI.

Other beneficiaries include students (19%), low-income earners (15%), civil servants (ASN) (9%), workers (5%), and fishermen (1%).

Apartment buildings are one alternative solution to housing and settlement needs, especially in urban areas with increasing populations. Apartment buildings can be a solution because they reduce land use, thus leaving more open space in the city.

The trend of apartment building construction has been declining since 2017. A total of 10,497 apartment units were built in 2015.

There was an increase in apartment building construction to 7,740 units in 2016 and 13,251 units in 2017. Then, the number of constructions decreased to 11,670 units in 2018 and 5,634 units in 2019. Finally, only 823 apartment units were built in 2020.
