Most Indonesian Construction Companies Were Small-Scale in 2021

Most Indonesian construction companies are small-scale businesses. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded 150,375 such units, representing 73.93% of all Indonesian construction companies.

Small-scale companies are most prevalent on Java Island, with 57,023 units. This is followed by Sumatra with 44,451 units, Sulawesi with 21,023 units, Kalimantan with 19,812 units, and Maluku and Papua with 14,013 units. Meanwhile, 11,283 small-scale construction companies are located in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Medium-scale businesses number 27,656 units, or 13.6%. Java Island again dominates this business scale category, with 18,785 units. Sumatra contributes 6,746 units, Kalimantan 2,860 units, Sulawesi 2,707 units, Maluku and Papua 2,089 units, and Bali and Nusa Tenggara 861 units.

Large-scale businesses are the least numerous. There are only 1,750 large-scale construction companies, or 0.86% of the total number of Indonesian construction companies. Similar to the previous two categories, Java Island dominates with 1,308 units, followed by Sumatra with 173 units. This is followed by Kalimantan with 98 units, Maluku and Papua with 85 units, Sulawesi with 56 units, and Bali and Nusa Tenggara with 30 units.

Non-qualified companies account for 11.61%. This group comprises construction companies with legal entities that have never obtained business certification from the National Construction Services Development Institute (LPJK). This group also includes companies whose certifications have expired.

The total number of Indonesian construction companies is 203,403 units. The breakdown is as follows: 77,116 units in Java, 51,370 units in Sumatra, 23,786 units in Sulawesi, 16,187 units in Maluku and Papua, and 22,770 units in Kalimantan. The smallest number is in Bali and Nusa Tenggara, with 12,174 units.
