KedaiKOPI released the *Indonesia Youth Optimism Index Survey Report 2022* on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.
The survey measured the optimism level of young Indonesians towards the future of Indonesia across various sectors of life. Five main sectors were highlighted: education and culture, basic needs, economy and health, social life, and politics and law.
According to the report, the highest level of optimism among young people was in the basic needs sector, such as meeting balanced nutritional needs for themselves, children, and partners, as well as purchasing clothing and future housing.
A total of 81.5% of respondents expressed optimism in the basic needs sector, 17.7% were neutral, and 0.9% were pessimistic. The net index score was calculated by subtracting the percentage of pessimistic respondents from the percentage of optimistic respondents.
The net index score for the basic needs sector was 80.6, indicating a very high level of optimism.
Young people also expressed optimism in the education and culture, economy and health, and social life sectors, with net index scores of 77, 73, and 50.2 respectively.
However, young people were pessimistic about the politics and law sector, with a net index score of -10.2. This is because only 16% of young people were optimistic that Indonesia could implement a clean, good, and transparent government system in the future.
The survey indicated that high levels of corruption in Indonesia were the main reason why the law and politics sector had the lowest optimism level compared to other sectors.
Overall, the optimism level of Indonesian youth decreased by 4% compared to the previous year. The total net index for 2022 was 60.3%, compared to 64.0% in 2021.
This survey was conducted from July 7-22, 2022, using a telephone survey method with 906 Gen Z (17-24 years old) and Gen Y (25-40 years old) respondents spread across 11 major cities in Indonesia. The response rate was 17.67%.
