There Are Still Cases of Prohibition of Worship in Indonesia in 2025

According to the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), there were at least 32 incidents of violations against freedom of religion and belief in Indonesia from December 2024 to November 2025.

The most common violations were prohibitions on worship, followed by destruction, and rejection of the construction of places of worship.

Here are the details of actions related to violations against freedom of religion and belief in Indonesia from December 2024 to November 2025:

• Prohibition of worship: 14 cases
• Destruction: 9 cases
• Rejection of construction of places of worship: 6 cases
• Sealing of places of worship: 4 cases
• Persecution: 4 cases
• Intimidation: 4 cases
• Arbitrary arrest: 1 case
• Discrimination: 1 case

According to KontraS, these various actions were carried out by diverse actors, ranging from the community to the government.

"Two of these cases that garnered significant public attention were the forced disbandment of a Christian retreat in Sukabumi and the destruction of a Christian prayer house in Padang," KontraS stated in its report.

KontraS compiled this data from mass media reports verified by the Press Council, social media, public information disclosure data from state institutions, as well as processing public complaints and records of cases assisted by KontraS.
