Many parents are accustomed to giving gifts to educators during holidays or at the time of grade promotions in 2024. This was found by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in its 2024 Education Integrity Assessment Survey (SPI).

The KPK recorded that 68.46% of educational institutions in Indonesia have a culture of such gratuities. The breakdown shows 69.14% in basic and secondary education (dasmen) and 47.19% in higher education (dikti).

Beyond the custom, there's a perception that justifies the act of giving gratuities. The KPK found that 68.10% of educational institutions have educators who believe that gratuities are acceptable. In basic and secondary education institutions, this perception was expressed by 68.54% of respondents, while in higher education institutions it was 54.59%.

Other acts of gratuity, such as lecturers receiving gifts from students to facilitate graduation, reached 58.61%. Meanwhile, 29.17% of educational institutions reported teachers receiving gifts from students in exchange for preferential treatment.

Furthermore, the KPK revealed that 10.88% of educational institutions experienced instances of student or student admission due to certain payments. Looking at the type of institution, higher education institutions had the highest percentage at 40.05%, while basic and secondary education institutions reported 9.91%.

The 2024 Education SPI covered 36,888 educational institutions in 507 regencies/cities across 38 provinces in Indonesia. The survey involved 449,865 respondents, comprising students, parents/guardians, educators, and heads of educational institutions.
