List of Refugee Hosting Countries Worldwide, Turkey Hosts the Most

Countries in border regions experiencing conflict and war often become destinations for refugees seeking safety. A report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shows that Turkey hosted the highest number of refugees in border regions in 2020. At least 3.65 million Syrian refugees sought refuge in Turkey.

The next country hosting the most refugees in border regions was Colombia, sheltering 1.73 million Venezuelan refugees in 2020.

Pakistan hosted 1.43 million Afghan refugees. Uganda sheltered 1.42 million refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Burundi, and Somalia.

Germany and Sudan each hosted 1.21 million and 1.04 million refugees, respectively. Lebanon and Bangladesh each sheltered 870,000 and 867,000 refugees, respectively. Ethiopia and Iran each hosted 800,000 refugees.

The report indicates that 26.4 million people worldwide were forced to flee to other countries in 2020 due to persecution, conflict, violence, and human rights violations. Syria had the highest number of refugees, with 6.7 million people that year. The next highest numbers of refugees originated from Venezuela and Afghanistan, with 3.9 million and 2.6 million people respectively.
