Russia Deploys Troops: Death Toll from the 2014-2020 Ukraine Conflict

Russia sent its troops into Ukrainian territory on Tuesday (February 22).

Looking back a decade, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been brewing since 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea.

Citing the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, in 2014 there were 4,378 deaths due to fighting in Ukraine. This number then decreased to 1,314 in 2015.

During the period 2016-2020, deaths due to fighting continued, but the number did not exceed 1,000. The highest number of deaths during this period was 409 in 2017.

This death toll may be lower than the actual figure. In May 2021, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba reported that the number of deaths due to the conflict in Ukraine had reached 14,000.

The deployment of Russian troops to Ukraine on Tuesday (February 22) followed President Vladimir Putin's recognition of the sovereignty of Luhansk and Donetsk, two eastern Ukrainian regions controlled by pro-Russian separatist groups.

This action by Russia has been condemned by Western countries. The United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan have even announced sanctions against Russia.
