Industry Sector Contributes 20 Percent to GDP

Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) structure in the first quarter of 2019 comprised approximately 20 percent from the industrial sector. This sector contributed the most compared to the other 15 sectors. However, at the beginning of the year, its growth rate was only 3.8 percent, one of the lowest after the agricultural and mining sectors.

Indonesia's economy in the first quarter of 2019 grew by 5.07 percent year-on-year. This growth rate decreased compared to the achievement in the fourth quarter of 2018, which reached 5.18 percent. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) stated that a slowdown occurred at the beginning of the year, despite Indonesia's economic relations with several countries remaining positive.

BPS noted that some businesses experienced expansive growth, such as Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries at 14.10 percent, but this was insufficient to prevent contraction in the first quarter of 2019. This decline was caused by contractionary growth in several business sectors with significant contributions. These sectors include Construction (-4.30 percent); Mining and Quarrying (-0.25 percent); Transportation and Warehousing (-0.56 percent); and Government Administration, Land, and Mandatory Social Security (-9.49 percent).
