The Ready-Made Garment and Textile Industry Contracted by 4.08% in 2021

The regional gross domestic product (GDP) of the ready-made garment and textile industry at current prices (ADHB) amounted to Rp180.22 trillion in 2021.

Measured at constant 2010 prices, the national ready-made garment and textile industry experienced a contraction of 4.08% last year compared to the previous year. This contraction is the second consecutive year.

This contraction is in line with household consumption expenditure on clothing, footwear, and their maintenance, which experienced negative growth of 0.06% last year.

Last year, household consumption was more focused on meeting the needs of restaurants and hotels (grew 3.87%), followed by transportation and communication (grew 2.62%), and housing and household equipment (grew 2.19%).

The domestic ready-made garment and textile industry is still struggling due to the changing consumption patterns of the community during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, export demand for Indonesian ready-made garments and textiles has increased. This is what made the contraction experienced by the ready-made garment and textile industry in 2021 less severe than the previous year.

For information, Indonesia's textile and ready-made garment exports grew by 17.74% to US$6.9 billion in 2021 compared to the previous year's US$5.85 billion. The United States remains the main export market for national textiles and ready-made garments with a value of US$3.87 billion or approximately 56.13% of total exports.
