The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of wholesale and retail trade at current prices (ADHB) amounted to Rp2.2 quadrillion in 2021.
Details show that wholesale and retail trade for cars, motorcycles, and their repairs amounted to Rp407.88 trillion in the previous year. Meanwhile, wholesale and retail trade excluding cars and motorcycles amounted to Rp1.79 quadrillion.
Measured in terms of GRDP at constant 2010 prices (ADHK), the wholesale and retail trade sector grew by 4.65% in 2021 compared to the previous year.
This means the sector's growth was higher than the national GDP growth, which only grew by 3.69%. This achievement is the first since 2015, as shown in the graph.
The achievement of the wholesale and retail trade sector in 2021 was higher than in 2020, which experienced a contraction of 3.78%. The achievement was also higher than before the Covid-19 pandemic, when it grew by 4.6% in 2019.
The wholesale and retail sub-sector for cars, motorcycles, and their repairs grew by 12.1% in 2021, higher than the previous year which experienced a contraction of 14.11%.
Similarly, the wholesale and retail sub-sector excluding cars and motorcycles grew by 3.14% in 2021 compared to the previous year, which experienced a contraction of 1.37%.
Increased Contribution of the Wholesale and Retail Sector
Throughout 2021, the wholesale and retail sector contributed 12.97% to the national GDP.
Wholesale and retail trade is the third largest contributing sector to the national economy, after the manufacturing industry with a contribution of 19.25% and the agricultural sector with 13.28%.
