Trend of Average Monthly Expenditure of Indonesian Citizens, 2021-2025

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the average monthly per capita expenditure of Indonesian residents on food and non-food items grew by 4.57% (year-on-year/yoy) in early 2025, reaching Rp1.57 million.

The average monthly per capita expenditure on food consumption is calculated over the last week, while non-food items are calculated over the last month and last year.

BPS explained that the presented average per capita consumption/expenditure figure is obtained by dividing the total consumption of all households by the total population.

The food group includes grains, tubers, fish/shrimp/squid/shellfish, meat, eggs, milk, vegetables, legumes, fruits, oil, coconut, beverage ingredients, spices, other food ingredients, prepared food and beverages, and tobacco products.

Meanwhile, non-food items include housing, household facilities, various goods and services, clothing, footwear, headwear, durable goods, taxes, levies, insurance, party necessities, and ceremonies/feasts.

During the 2021-2025 period, the average monthly per capita expenditure consistently grew, from Rp1.26 million in 2021 to Rp1.57 million in 2025.

Based on categories, in early 2025, the average non-food consumption was slightly higher, at Rp793 thousand per capita per month, compared to food, which was Rp775 thousand.

Within the non-food group, the highest average monthly per capita expenditure was for the housing and household facilities category, at Rp398 thousand.

As for food consumption, the highest average monthly per capita expenditure was for the prepared food and beverages category, at Rp248 thousand.
