According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in March 2024, the average Indonesian spent Rp1.5 million per capita per month.
This figure is up 3.35% compared to March of the previous year (year-on-year/yoy).
The increase was mainly driven by higher food expenditure.
In March 2024, average household food expenditure rose by 5.69% (yoy) to Rp751,790 per capita per month.
Meanwhile, average expenditure on non-food commodities increased by only 1.10% (yoy) to Rp748,770 per capita per month.
In March 2024, food expenditure accounted for 50.10% of total per capita expenditure in Indonesia.
This proportion increased compared to March 2023, when food expenditure accounted for 48.99%.
The increased proportion of food expenditure indicates a decline in the standard of living.
"The higher the welfare of a region's population, the smaller the share of food expenditure; the converse is also true," stated BPS in its report, *Household Consumption Expenditure in Indonesia by Province* (2024).
