The Oil and Gas and Geothermal Sectors Experienced Another Contraction

The mining and quarrying sector experienced a slowdown in the third quarter of 2017 compared to the previous quarter. Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded that the sector's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the third quarter grew by only 1.76 percent (YoY), reaching Rp 195.57 trillion, significantly below national economic growth. This is a decrease from the previous quarter's 2.31 percent (YoY) growth.

The oil, gas, and geothermal sub-sector even recorded a contraction of 1.47 percent (YoY). However, this contraction slowed compared to the previous quarter's 2.32 percent (YoY) contraction. The GDP of the oil, gas, and geothermal sub-sector in the third quarter of this year fell to Rp 77.47 trillion from Rp 78.63 trillion in the same quarter of the previous year. Meanwhile, the metal ore mining sector recorded growth of 7.51 percent (YoY), compared to 6.44 percent (YoY) in the previous quarter.

The domestic economy in the third quarter of 2017 recorded growth of 5.06 percent (YoY), compared to 5.01 percent (YoY) in the previous quarter. Cumulatively (Q1-Q3 2017), Indonesia's GDP grew by 5.03 percent compared to the same period the previous year.
