Warehousing Sector Grew 5.03% in 2021: Here's What Drove It

The emergence of marketplaces and the resulting online shopping phenomenon have driven the growth of the warehousing sector and supporting transportation services in Indonesia. The number of freight (logistics) companies has also increased in line with rising demand for goods delivery.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at current prices (ADHB) for the warehousing and supporting transportation services sector, including postal and courier services, reaching Rp141.53 trillion in 2021.

This value represents 19.67% of the national transportation and warehousing GDP, which reached Rp719.63 trillion, and 0.83% of the national GDP.

Measured by GDP at constant 2010 prices (ADHK), the warehousing sector grew by 5.03% to Rp66.38 trillion last year compared to the previous year. This achievement is above the national GDP growth, which only grew by 3.69% in 2021.

In the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, the warehousing and supporting transportation services sector experienced a contraction of 17.61%. The paralysis of all business lines following the implementation of social restrictions led to negative growth in this sector. However, last year it was able to recover and grow in line with the improvement of the domestic economy.

Over the past 11 years, the warehousing sector has grown at an average of 5.15% per year. The highest growth was achieved in 2019, reaching double digits, as shown in the graph.
