East Kalimantan had the highest Regional Gross Domestic Product (RGDP) in the mining and quarrying sector from 2017-2019. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded that the RGDP (constant prices) of the mining and quarrying sector in the province reached Rp 215.2 trillion in 2017.
The RGDP of the mining and quarrying sector in East Kalimantan increased to Rp 217.6 trillion the following year. In 2019, the RGDP of the mining and quarrying sector in East Kalimantan rose again by 3.24% to Rp 233.8 trillion.
Besides East Kalimantan, the RGDP of the mining and quarrying sector in East Java and South Sumatra also increased during the same period. As a result, these two provinces had RGDPs in the mining and quarrying sector of Rp 83.8 trillion and Rp 71.4 trillion, respectively.
Meanwhile, Papua and Riau provinces experienced a decline in the RGDP of the mining and quarrying sector during that period. Papua experienced the largest decline in 2019, reaching 43.2 percent compared to 2018.

Nationally, the economic growth from the mining and quarrying sector in 2019 was the lowest compared to other sectors, at 0.9 percent. Bappenas stated that the stalled growth in this sector was due to the contraction in oil and gas and geothermal mining by 2.3% and metal ore mining by 4.1%.
