2016, Bank Indonesia Destroys Rp 161 Trillion in Indonesian Currency

In September 2016, Bank Indonesia (BI) destroyed Indonesian Rupiah banknotes totaling Rp 18.8 trillion. Therefore, from January to September 2016, the central bank destroyed a total of Rp 161.4 trillion, a 38.9 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year (Rp 116.2 trillion).

Banknotes deemed unfit as legal tender due to water damage, tears, or other reasons that cast doubt on their authenticity were destroyed by BI. The destroyed banknotes comprised denominations of Rp 1,000, Rp 2,000, Rp 5,000, Rp 10,000, Rp 20,000, Rp 50,000, and Rp 100,000.

BI launched new rupiah banknotes and coins as legal tender in Indonesia on December 19, 2016. The new currency consisted of 7 banknotes and 4 coins. The introduction of the new currency did not invalidate the old currency, as it has not yet been withdrawn from circulation.
