February 2018, Bank Indonesia's Foreign Currency Cash Reserves Decreased by 6%

Bank Indonesia's (BI) interventions to curb rupiah exchange rate volatility have eroded its foreign exchange reserves. As a result, BI's foreign exchange reserves at the end of February 2018 decreased by US$3.92 billion (2.897%) to US$128.1 billion from the previous month.

The largest decrease in BI's foreign exchange reserves was in the form of securities, reaching US$3.26 billion (2.84%) to US$111.68 billion. This was followed by foreign currency notes and deposits, which decreased by US$601.5 million (5.9%) from the previous month.

Based on its composition, the central bank's foreign exchange reserves are predominantly in securities, accounting for 87.12% of the total. Foreign currency notes and deposits account for 7.5% and monetary gold for 2.68%, respectively. Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) amounted to US$1.62 billion, or approximately 1.27% of BI's total foreign exchange reserves.
