The British energy research institution, Ember Climate, suspects that Indonesia's government underreports methane emissions from coal mining activities.

In its report, Ember states that Indonesian coal mine methane (CMM) emissions could be seven times higher using data from satellites and mines.

Specifically, satellite data suggests Indonesian CMM emissions could reach 750 kt CH4, approximately six times greater than the official government estimate of 128 kt CH4. This research was conducted by Shen et al. and published in the journal *Nature*.
