Indonesia Ranks Among the World's Largest Coal Reserve Holders

Based on BP data, Indonesia had coal reserves of 34.869 million tonnes in 2020. This figure represents 3.25% of the world's total coal reserves of 1.074 billion tonnes. This ranking places Indonesia as the 7th largest coal reserve holder globally.

The country with the largest coal reserves is the United States, with 248.941 million tonnes, accounting for 23.18% of the world's total reserves.

Following the US, the countries with the largest coal reserves are Russia with 162.166 million tonnes (15.1%), Australia with 150.227 million tonnes (13.99%), China with 143.197 million tonnes (13.33%), and India with 111.052 million tonnes (10.34%).

Germany also holds significant reserves at 35.900 million tonnes (3.34%), followed by Ukraine with 34.375 million tonnes (3.2%), Poland with 28.395 million tonnes (2.64%), and Kazakhstan with 25.605 million tonnes (2.38%).

The total coal reserves in these 10 countries amount to 974.727 million tonnes, representing 90.75% of the world's total coal reserves last year. By region, the largest coal reserves are located in the Asia-Pacific region (42.8%), followed by North America (23.9%), and Europe (12.78%).
