Not long ago, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) released its Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 report.

In its report, USGS estimated that global nickel mine production in 2025 would be around 3.9 million metric tons, an increase of 5% year-on-year (yoy).

By country, Indonesia's nickel mine production in 2025 would be the largest globally, reaching 2.6 million metric tons.

This achievement would make Indonesia contribute up to 67% of the total global nickel mine production in 2025.

"Production in Indonesia increased by around 13% as new operations continue to increase their output," explained USGS in its report.

Not only in Indonesia, the increase in nickel mine production also occurred in United States, Brazil, Canada, China, and New Caledonia, as shown in the graph.

Meanwhile, nickel mine production in Australia plummeted by 54% (yoy). According to USGS, this is due to several companies putting their mines into maintenance and repair mode due to low prices.

A decline was also experienced in the Philippines, where nickel mine production in 2025 fell by 24% (yoy), following reports of production cuts in several mines.

"In Palawan Province, Philippines, a 50-year ban on new mining permits has been announced. This ban does not affect existing operations," said USGS.
