The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution allows its citizens to possess firearms, such as handguns and rifles.
According to FBI data compiled by the independent organization SafeHome.org, millions of firearms were sold in the US annually between 2014 and 2023.
Sales surged in 2020, reaching 22.68 million firearms sold in a single year.
According to Rob Gabriele, a security expert from SafeHome.org, this was influenced by the pandemic and the elections.
"The COVID-19 pandemic and widespread racial justice protests in the US increased concerns about personal safety," Gabriele said in a report on the website on Friday, June 28, 2024.
"The controversial 2020 US election and concerns about changes to gun control regulations further fueled the increase in purchases," he added.
Based on this trend, Gabriele predicts that firearm sales in the US will increase again in 2024, coinciding with the upcoming elections.
"There are several reasons to believe that the 2024 US election will also drive an increase in gun sales, amid ongoing gun violence, economic instability, and planned regulatory changes," said Gabriele.
"President Joe Biden's plans to restrict gun use, tighten background checks for buyers, and ban assault weapons could increase demand for guns, as buyers anticipate regulatory changes if Biden wins a second term," he continued.
