The Indonesian government aims to build 53 mineral processing plants, or smelters. This plan, initiated in 2021, is targeted for completion by 2024.
Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, stated that the government will continue to encourage the development of smelters for nickel, bauxite, copper, and other minerals. Of the 53 smelter projects, several are already 30%-90% complete.
According to *Investor.id*, the largest portion of these projects consists of nickel smelters, totaling 30 units. This includes 13 existing units and 17 planned units.
Next, 11 bauxite smelters are planned, comprising 2 existing and 9 planned units.
There are also 4 iron smelters: 1 existing and 3 planned.
Four copper smelters are planned, with 2 existing and 2 planned units.

* Manganese Ore: 2 units
* Existing: 1 unit
* Planned: 1 unit
* Zinc: 2 units
* Existing: 0 units
* Planned: 2 units
Seven smelters were completed in 2022
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is also overseeing the target of building 53 smelters by 2024. At least 7 smelter projects were completed in 2022.
These projects include those from PT Aneka Tambang in Pomalaa, Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi; PT Vale Indonesia in South Sulawesi; PT Wanatiara Persada in North Maluku; PT Fajar Bhakti Lintas Nusantara; PT Weda Bay Nickel in Maluku; PT ANTAM (P3FH project) in North Maluku; and PT Sebuku Iron Lateritic Ores in South Kalimantan.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif stated that his ministry is targeting an additional 17 smelters to meet domestic processing needs in 2023.
"We are targeting 17 more smelters to be completed in 2023," said Arifin Tasrif at a press conference on the 2022 Performance Achievements and 2023 Work Program of the ESDM Ministry in Jakarta, Monday (30/1/2023).
