According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global coal production in 2023 reached 8.7 billion tons, a 1.8% increase compared to 2022 (year-on-year/yoy).
In 2023, China remained the largest coal producer with a production of 4.43 billion tons, equivalent to 50.7% of total global coal production.
Following China is India with a coal production volume of 1.03 billion tons in 2023, equivalent to 11.7% of total global production.
Indonesia was the third largest coal producer globally, with a production volume of 725 million tons or 8.3% of total global production.
Other countries among the largest coal producers are the United States, Australia, and the European Union, with details as shown in the graph.
Combined, the six countries and one supranational organization mentioned above account for approximately 89.7% of total global coal production in 2023.
Coal production from these major producing countries generally increased in 2023.
The largest increase was in India, where coal production in 2023 rose by 11.4% (yoy).
Indonesia's coal production increased by 5.6% (yoy), Russia's by 2.9% (yoy), and China's by 1.3% (yoy).
Meanwhile, in 2023, the European Union's coal production decreased by 21.1% (yoy), the United States' by 10.2% (yoy), and Australia's by 1% (yoy).
