Pop music appears less popular among Gen Z. According to a Global Web Index (GWI) survey, only 23% of respondents aged 16-24 years old like the pop genre.
The majority of Gen Z respondents prefer hip-hop or rap music, with 31%. Then, 29% like 90s music, 27% rock music, and 23% music from the 2000s.
GWI found that Gen Z's musical tastes differ from older respondents.
"Respondents over 24 years old are stuck on 80s or 90s music," GWI stated in its latest *The Global Media Landscape* report released in November 2022.
"Hip-hop or rap music is more popular among the 16-24 age group, perhaps because they don't have musical period references for nostalgia, except for music from the 2000s," it continued.
However, GWI assesses that the current music market cannot be entirely categorized by genre. Because now music streaming consumers are generally more accustomed to playlists that focus on mood rather than genre.
"Some popular playlists on Spotify are titled 'Confidence Boost', 'Sad Hour', or 'Feelin' Myself'. This mood-based categorization of music is becoming more popular, while genre is becoming increasingly difficult to define," said GWI.
This survey was conducted by GWI throughout the second quarter of 2022, involving approximately 170,000 respondents from 48 countries. The surveyed countries came from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, including Indonesia.
