The British rock/alternative band, The 1975, canceled their performance at the annual We The Fest music festival in Jakarta on Sunday, July 23, 2023.
This followed vocalist Matty Healy kissing the band's male bassist, Ross MacDonald, onstage at the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday, July 22, 2023.
According to BBC Indonesia, prior to this action, the vocalist attacked the country's anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) laws. Matty's statements reportedly included "foul language."
Homosexuality is categorized as an illegal act in Malaysia, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Conversely, the Malaysian LGBTQ community views Matty's outspoken manner as further worsening the lives of this vulnerable minority group, as reported by Republika.
The 1975 subsequently ended their performance, claiming they were ordered off stage by officials. The Malaysian government even disbanded the music festival after only one of its three scheduled days.
Following the incident, The 1975 reportedly canceled their gigs in Jakarta and Taipei. The cancellation of the concert in the Taiwanese capital occurred despite the East Asian country guaranteeing LGBT rights and allowing same-sex marriage.
"We never take the decision to cancel a show lightly and were excited to play for fans in Jakarta and Taipei. However, it is unfortunately impossible to proceed with the shows as scheduled due to current circumstances," The 1975 said, as quoted by We The Fest via their Instagram account.
As a result, Sheila On 7 replaced The 1975 at the We The Fest on Sunday night. The 1975 previously held a concert in Jakarta on September 29, 2019, and performed at We The Fest 2016.
