Unmatched Sales, PS2 Becomes the Best-Selling Video Game Console of All Time

Video game consoles have evolved year after year, with a wide variety of types and features offered.

Several video game consoles have been incredibly popular worldwide. The consoles dominating the market come from brands like PlayStation (PS), Nintendo, and Xbox.

Data from companies and VGChartz, processed by Statista, shows that the PlayStation 2 (PS2) is the best-selling video game console of all time, with estimated sales exceeding 155 million units. This Sony product has not been produced since 2013.

Second is the Nintendo Switch, reaching 125.6 million units as of March 31, 2023. This product from Fusajiro Yamauchi is still in production, so the number is predicted to increase.

Third is the PS4, which achieved sales of 117 million units. Its predecessor, the PS1, follows in fourth place with 102.4 million units.

The PS5, released in November 2020, has only sold 38.4 million units.

From the attached data, Statista states that Sony has dominated the gaming landscape for almost the last three decades. This is evident from the three PlayStation consoles occupying the top four positions.

"After its arrival in 2000, the PlayStation 2 became a massive hit and remained popular for a very long time. Even though its successor arrived in 2006, the PS2 continued production until 2013 as an affordable entry-level system," Statista wrote on its Instagram account, @Statista, Tuesday (May 16, 2023).

Statista doubts the Nintendo Switch will overtake the PS2, despite its close position. Statista notes that the Switch is still 30 million units behind and its sales have slowed significantly in the last two years. According to Statista, the PS2 rightfully maintains its title as the best-selling game console of all time.
