According to data from Comic Book Resource (CBR), *Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train* (2020) is the highest-grossing anime film of all time. Inspired by Koyoharu Gotouge's work, this film grossed US$507.1 million, or approximately Rp7.61 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp15,010/US$).
CBR lauded *Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train* as a game-changer for anime films following its US theatrical debut.
“The film's success was unprecedented, breaking records and exceeding fan expectations,” CBR stated on its website on Friday, May 26, 2023.
“The film's bloody fight scenes and darker tone also dispelled the outdated notion that anime is immature entertainment for children,” CBR added.
The next highest-grossing anime film is *Spirited Away* (2001). This Studio Ghibli production amassed a total revenue of US$395.8 million.
Following this, three films by Makoto Shinkai—*Your Name* (2016), *Suzume* (2022), and *Weathering With You* (2019)—also made the list of highest-grossing anime films of all time. Furthermore, the recent film *One Piece Film – Red* (2022) also successfully entered the list of highest-grossing anime films of all time.
