National cement consumption growth has slowed since 2012. After reaching its peak in 2011, cement consumption growth continued to slow until 2016. In 2011, domestic cement consumption recorded growth of 17.7 percent, but slowed from 2012 to 2016. The sluggish domestic economy caused a slowdown in domestic cement demand.
From January to November 2016, national cement consumption reached 56.5 million tons, only growing 0.3 percent from November 2015, which was 56.34 million tons. Cement consumption in the Java region throughout 2016 decreased by 2.1 percent to 30.78 million tons. Similarly, cement consumption in Kalimantan also decreased by 11.7 percent to 3.8 million tons. Meanwhile, cement consumption in Sulawesi still showed an increase of 14.7 percent to 4.96 million tons, and Papua and Maluku also grew by 7.1 percent to 1.3 million tons.
In 2017, cement consumption is predicted to increase to 84.96 million tons. The Director General of Chemical, Textile and Miscellaneous Industries (IKTA) of the Ministry of Industry, Achmad Sigit Dwiwahjono, stated that government projects require a large supply of cement, and this demand will increase every year. Furthermore, the construction of housing and property will drive cement demand.
