The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's rice imports totaled 2.53 million tons, valued at US$1.45 billion, from January to November 2023.

"These rice imports were dominated by Thailand, Vietnam, and Pakistan," said Pudji Ismartini, Deputy for Distribution and Service Statistics at BPS, in an online press conference on Friday, December 15, 2023.

She detailed that Thailand supplied 45.47% of total rice imports during that period.

This was followed by Vietnam with 41.49% and Pakistan with 7.17%.

Other countries contributed only 5.87% of total rice imports as of November 2023.

Meanwhile, the National Food Agency plans to increase the minimum limit of the Government Rice Reserve (CBP) to 3 million tons.

Head of NFA Afief Prasetyo Adi mentioned that the current CBP stock is a concern for President Joko Widodo. He was asked to ensure that the CBP is distributed to eastern Indonesia.

"This is to ensure that under any circumstances, whether it's climate change, El Niño, or anything else," said Arief in his official statement, as reported by Katadata, Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

Arief stated that rice imports were necessary due to a decrease in domestic rice production. He said that there needs to be an increase in the area of ??rice harvested in 2024.

"If the planted area can be increased to up to two hectares, we will be able to meet rice needs from domestic sources again," he said.
