Indonesia's stock market capitalization is estimated to have reached half of the country's GDP by the end of 2021.

Indonesia's stock market capitalization at the end of 2021 is estimated to have reached half, or 49.65%, of the 2021 national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Rp 16.63 quadrillion. This percentage of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) market capitalization to GDP is higher than the previous year's approximately 45%.

This is in line with the easing of the Covid-19 pandemic, which restored investor confidence and led to a return of investment in the stock market. Stock prices, previously discounted at low prices, and rising optimism towards the domestic economy boosted stock price movements.

The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) closed at 6,581.48 at the end of 2021 trading. This figure is up 602.41 points (10.08%) from its end-of-2020 position of 5,979.07. It is also up 281.94 points (4.48%) from its 2019 position, before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, the addition of 54 new issuers throughout last year increased the stock market capitalization on the IDX by Rp 1.28 quadrillion or 18.4% to Rp 8.26 quadrillion in December 2021 from the previous year. This figure is also higher than the end-of-2019 position of only Rp 7.26 quadrillion.

The average daily trading on the IDX in 2021 was 22.54 billion shares, with a transaction value of Rp 13.43 trillion and a frequency of 1.32 million times. Meanwhile, the total transactions throughout last year reached 5.1 trillion shares with a value of Rp 3.3 quadrillion and a frequency of 319.82 billion times over 247 trading days.
