Indonesia paid Rp 314 trillion in debt interest in 2020.

The Central Government Financial Report (LKPP) states that government spending on debt service payments increased by 14% to Rp 314.09 trillion in 2020. This figure reached 92.7% of the budget ceiling set by Presidential Regulation Number 72 of 2020.

Last year's realization of government debt service payments reached 17.14% of the total central government spending of Rp 1,832.95 trillion, or 12.1% of total state spending, which reached Rp 2,595.48 trillion.

The details are as follows: Rp 229.22 trillion for domestic long-term debt service payments; Rp 50.59 trillion for returns on domestic Syariah State Securities (SBSN); Rp 16.93 trillion for long-term foreign debt service payments; Rp 9.41 trillion for domestic State Debt Securities (SUN) payments; and Rp 7.93 trillion for SBSN discounts.

As is known, government debt reached Rp 6,554.56 trillion at the end of June 2021. This figure represents 41.35% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The details are: Rp 4,430.87 trillion in domestic SBNs; Rp 1,280.92 trillion in foreign currency (Valas) SBNs; and Rp 842.76 trillion in loans.

For information, debt service payments are payments made for the outstanding principal of both domestic and foreign debt, calculated based on the loan position, and penalty payments in the form of interest.
