Global Semiconductor Sales Projected to Reach US$601 Billion in 2022

Supply chain disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic have exacerbated the global semiconductor crisis. This poses a significant challenge to automotive industry players worldwide, including Indonesia.

According to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) and the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global semiconductor sales in 2019 reached US$412.3 billion. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) then increased by 6.8 percent in 2020 to US$440.4 billion.

Worldwide semiconductor sales further increased to US$555.9 billion in 2021, with a CAGR of 7.18 percent. WSTS projects industry semiconductor sales to reach US$601 billion in 2022 and US$633 billion in 2023.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), Johannes Loman, stated that his members have managed to overcome the semiconductor crisis.

"I think the chip problem has been resolved by our members. If you look since August, the total market was around 500, and September as well, although September's figures haven't been officially announced, it was also around 500. So, in my opinion, it should be resolved," said Loman in Jakarta on Tuesday (11/10), as quoted by Antara.

However, he acknowledged that Indonesia still experiences relatively long waiting lists (inden) for certain types of new motorcycles.

According to him, the long waiting periods apply to vehicles still imported from their country of origin and those with larger engine capacities.
