PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk. refused to negotiate with the Russian LockBit hacking group on Tuesday morning (May 16, 2023). LockBit immediately spread the stolen data from the BRIS-coded issuer to the dark web.

As reported by *Katadata*, the Singapore-based technology security company, Fusion Intelligence Center @ DarkTracer, uploaded screenshots containing a number of BSI data points successfully breached by the hackers to its Twitter account.

Some of the leaked data revealed operational, funding, and transaction data, as well as the BSI database hacked from March 8, 2023, to May 15, 2023.

In its statement on the dark web, LockBit also urged the public to stop using BSI, including encouraging friends and family to do the same.

"Stop using BSI. These people don't know how to protect your money and personal information from criminals. They can't even get their site up in a week," LockBit wrote.

The news reported by Fusion Intelligence Center @ DarkTracer quickly went viral on social media, reaching 3.8 million users. Many Indonesian Twitter users commented on the tweet.

Sentiment surrounding the data breach affected BSI's stock movement. According to Yahoo Finance, BSI shares immediately plummeted.

In today's trading, Tuesday (May 16, 2023), BSI shares opened at Rp1,720. However, by 1 p.m. WIB, the share price fell to Rp1,600, down 120 points or -6.98%.

This was the lowest point during April-May 2023. During that period, BRIS shares were observed to be in the range of Rp1,675-1,800.

BRIS shares did experience a sharp drop in trading during February-March 2023. For 17 days, between February 27 and March 21, 2023, they mostly traded in the range of Rp1,515-1,630.
