86.91% of Indonesian Households Used Gas for Cooking in 2023

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the majority, or 86.91%, of Indonesian households used gas for cooking in 2023.

The gas used includes 5.5-kilogram (kg) LPG, 3-kg LPG, and piped gas or biogas.

By region, the province with the highest proportion of households using gas for cooking is East Kalimantan, at 97.74%.

Meanwhile, the lowest is East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), at only 1.43%. This is because the majority, or 68.11%, of households in that province use firewood for cooking.

Next, 9.82% of Indonesian households use firewood for cooking, followed by 2.45% using kerosene.

Then, 0.30% of households in Indonesia have used electricity for cooking. Another 0.04% use charcoal or briquettes for cooking.

Meanwhile, 0.47% use other fuels, including Indonesian households that do not cook at home.

In addition, as of January 1, 2024, the purchase of 3-kg LPG can only be made by registered buyers. To register, people can show their KTP (Indonesian identity card) and family card at authorized distributors.

This step is a government effort to accurately target the distribution of 3-kg LPG.

"Because the consumers are clearly identified based on the data in the KTP, the public can rest assured that this program will not affect the stock of subsidized LPG," said Heddy S Hedian, the fifth Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian National Private Sector Association for Oil and Gas (Himpunan Wiraswasta Nasional Minyak dan Gas - DPP HIMBARA), in a statement, as reported by Antara on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
