"Shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz have already driven sharp increases in fertilizer and energy prices," they said.

IFPRI assessed that this price surge poses a risk to food security, as it could lead to reduced fertilizer use and crop disruptions in various countries.

"The fertilizer sector remains very vulnerable to future supply and trade shocks, and efforts to boost resilience should be stepped up," they said.

However, the global price of urea fertilizer in March 2026 is still not as high as it was in 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine. At that time, the price reached US$925 per ton, as shown in the chart.
