Credit Suisse Group AG, an investment bank from Switzerland, is facing instability. Credit Suisse experienced a financial crisis after its default risk, or credit default swap spread, reached its highest level in a decade in September 2022. Recently, its stock plummeted by 30% on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, sparking investor panic.
The Financial Times reports that the head of the Saudi National Bank, Credit Suisse's main shareholder, is shying away from future investments. This follows turbulent banking stock trading after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in the United States.
According to Katadata, the fall in Credit Suisse's share price is a result of a Financial Times report stating that Credit Suisse executives are reassuring its major investors amid growing concerns about the company's financial condition. Previously, the company also cut approximately 5,000 employees citing efficiency reasons.
The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) and the Swiss National Bank have confirmed that the bank currently still meets the capital and liquidity requirements necessary for a systemically important bank.
Credit Suisse welcomed the statement of support from the central bank and financial regulator. Credit Suisse is also reportedly going to borrow 50 billion Swiss francs (CHF), or US$54 billion, from its central bank.
Aside from the turmoil in its stock and its overall financial condition, what is its current market capitalization?
According to Market Cap Companies, since 2013, Credit Suisse's annual average market capitalization has fluctuated, but has been dominated by declines.
In 2013, its market capitalization was US$48.88 billion. Then in 2014, it fell to US$40.56 billion, a 17% decrease.
In 2016, it reached US$29.98 billion. However, the following year, it experienced a significant increase to US$45.40 billion, a 51.45% rise.
Unfortunately, this achievement did not last long. In 2018, its market capitalization fell again to US$27.97 billion (-38.39%).
A massive decline occurred during the pandemic and continues to this day. Its value was US$31.60 billion (2020), US$23.21 billion (2021), US$12.04 billion (2022), and US$9.63 billion (March 16, 2023).
