Empty Cinemas, XXI Cinema Suffers Rp69 Billion Loss in Q1 2025

The parent company managing the Cinema XXI cinema network, PT Nusantara Sejahtera Raya Tbk (CNMA), reported a loss attributable to the parent entity of Rp69.43 billion in the first quarter of 2025.

This loss coincided with a 28.7% year-on-year (yoy) decrease in CNMA's revenue to Rp929.27 billion.

The decline occurred across almost all of CNMA's business lines. Cinema ticket sales fell by 29.49% (yoy) to Rp582.23 billion.

Food and beverage sales were down 28.23% (yoy) to Rp308.36 billion; digital platform revenue decreased by 30.32% to Rp18.06 billion; and other events and revenue fell by 16.66% to Rp7.65 billion.

Meanwhile, advertising revenue increased by 1.17% (yoy) to Rp12.95 billion in the first quarter of 2025.

Cinema XXI's CEO, Suryo Suherman, explained that this decline was influenced by the Ramadan period, resulting in reduced cinema attendance.

"Based on operational history, during this period, there is a visible change in consumption trends affecting the priorities and consumption patterns of the public," Suryo said in a press release on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

However, Suryo stated that the situation is expected to reverse in the second quarter of 2025, as the number of cinemagoers in April 2025 has already approached the total number of viewers in the first quarter of 2025.

"This surge in viewers is contributed by five films released during the Lebaran holiday period," he said.
