Nickel ore is a mineral used as a raw material for producing pure nickel and various nickel-processed products.
According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), its production trend in Indonesia has increased over the last decade.
In 2013, national nickel ore production volume reached 52 million tons, then in 2014-2015 production fell drastically.
Then, starting in 2017, the trend increased again, reaching 137 million tons in 2023, as shown in the graph.
Until this article was published, BPS has not yet released nickel ore production data for 2024.
However, according to the Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI), national nickel ore production in 2024 reached 298 million tons, a new record high.
"We saw that in 2024 it was almost 300 million (tons), this is for (nickel) ore," said APNI Secretary General Meidy Katrin Lengkey, as reported by *CNBCIndonesia.com* (21/1/2025).
Meidy stated that the increase in nickel ore production is in line with the increase in processed nickel production from smelters in Indonesia. He also mentioned that Indonesian nickel products have dominated the global market.
"Actually, our nickel in Indonesia has become a world determinant, especially in 2023 and 2024 we have held a market size of over 60%, some 63% to 65%, especially Indonesian nickel production," said Meidy.
