Global Biodiesel Production Reached 48.3 Billion Liters in 2021

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel produced from renewable natural sources, such as vegetable and animal oils. Biodiesel has similar properties to diesel fuel, so it can be used as a replacement fuel for diesel vehicles.

According to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), global biodiesel production amounted to 48.3 billion liters in 2021. This figure is up 3.2% from the average production of 46.8 million liters from 2018-2020. In 2030, biodiesel production is projected to reach 49.9 billion liters.

Global biodiesel consumption was recorded at 49.1 billion liters in 2021. This amount increased by 4.02% from the average consumption of 47.2 billion tons from 2018-2020. Global biodiesel consumption is projected to reach 49.9 billion liters in 2030.

Biodiesel is consumed more by developed countries. OECD data shows that biodiesel consumption in developed countries amounted to 29 billion liters in 2021. Meanwhile, consumption in developing countries amounted to 20.1 billion liters.

Global biodiesel exports in 2021 amounted to 6 billion liters. This figure decreased by 15.5% from the average export of 7.1 billion liters from 2018-2020. The amount of biodiesel exports in 2030 is projected to decrease to 5.3 billion liters.
