Based on data compiled by Data Pandas, there are 10 hottest countries in the world in 2024. These countries, which have the highest average air temperatures, are mostly located on the African continent.
Mali ranks first, with an average annual temperature reaching 28.3 degrees Celsius (°C). Burkina Faso has the same average temperature. Data Pandas states that these two countries are located in the Sahara Desert region of Africa.
“[These locations] offer little respite from the scorching sun,” Data Pandas wrote on its website, as quoted on Thursday (June 20, 2024).
Third is Kiribati with an average annual temperature of 28.2°C. Fourth and fifth are Djibouti and Tuvalu, with the same average temperature of 28°C.
Senegal is in sixth place with an average temperature of 27.9°C. Seventh and eighth are Mauritania and the Maldives, each with 27.7°C.
Finally, Palau and Benin share the ninth and tenth positions with the same average temperature of 27.6°C.
Indonesia is in 38th place globally, with an average annual temperature of 25.9°C.
Citing the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), the global surface temperature in May 2024 reached 2.12°F (1.18°C) above the 20th-century average of 58.6°F (14.8°C). The research team called this the hottest May ever recorded and the 12th consecutive month with the highest global temperature.
May temperatures were above average across most of the global land surface except for western North America, Greenland, southern South America, western Russia, and parts of East Antarctica.
“Meanwhile, Africa experienced the hottest May in history,” the research team said in a report on its website, as quoted on Thursday (June 20, 2024).
Sea surface temperatures were also above average in most areas and recorded record warmth in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Parts of the southern Indian Ocean, southeastern Pacific, and southern India were below average.
“Global oceans have recorded record warmth since April 2023,” the research team wrote.
