Foreign funds in the Indonesian Government Securities (SBN) market have been steadily decreasing since the beginning of the year until the third week of October 2022.

According to data from the Directorate General of Financing and Risk Management (DJPPR), on January 3, 2022, the total value of foreign/non-resident ownership in tradable rupiah-denominated SBN was still Rp893.6 trillion.

However, since the end of February 2022, immediately after Russia invaded Ukraine, the trend of foreign ownership in the SBN market has continued to decline, reaching a total value of Rp717.30 trillion as of October 20, 2022.

This amount has decreased by approximately Rp176.3 trillion, or 19.7%, year-to-date (YTD).

In terms of proportion, foreign funds in the SBN market now only reach around 14%, down from around 19% at the beginning of January 2022.

Amidst this situation, Bank Indonesia continues to strive to attract foreign investors back to the SBN market, one of which is by raising the BI 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate (BI7DRR) benchmark interest rate.

"(Bank Indonesia) continues the sale/purchase of SBN in the secondary market to strengthen the transmission of the BI7DRR increase in improving the attractiveness of SBN yields for the entry of foreign portfolio investors to strengthen the stabilization of the rupiah exchange rate," BI stated in its press release on Thursday (20/10/2022).
