According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia exported 777,400 tons of nickel in 2022, a 367% increase year-on-year (yoy).

In 2022, China was the main destination for Indonesian nickel exports, purchasing 661,700 tons, or 85% of the total national export volume.

In mid-2023, the Directorate General of Customs is following up on information from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) regarding alleged illegal exports of 5 million tons of nickel ore to China between January 2020 and June 2022.

This alleged smuggling has been going on since 2020, meaning since the export of nickel ore and concentrates was banned," said Nirwala Dwi Heryanto, Director of Communication and User Guidance at Customs, as reported by Katadata.co.id on Monday (26/6/2023).

Nirwala suspects that the illegal shipment of nickel ore to China was carried out gradually over the past two years. "If it wasn't shipped gradually, it wouldn't be possible; even a mother vessel wouldn't be able to handle it," he said.

Customs has conducted further coordination and in-depth analysis regarding the allegations, including using data from The General Administration of Customs of China (GACC).

According to Nirwala, Customs now has the names of the perpetrators of the illegal exports, and its findings will soon be submitted to the KPK.
