According to a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report, in 2020 the global marine fisheries industry yielded 78.8 million tons of catch.

This figure is down from the peak of 84.5 million tons achieved in 2018, and lower than the 2019 catch of 80 million tons.

The FAO recorded Indonesia's marine catch at 6.43 million tons in 2020. The only country with a larger catch was China, at 11.77 million tons.

"China remains the world's leading producer of marine catches, although its catch decreased from 14.4 million tons in 2015 to 11.77 million tons in 2020," explained the FAO.

The FAO anticipates a future increase in global marine fishing activity, coinciding with the recovery of countries from the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the fishing industry now faces new risks due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

"Russia, one of the largest producers of capture fisheries, has a highly export-oriented fishing sector. This export is now severely disrupted; the impact on trade value and export destination countries needs to be observed," the FAO clarified in its report.

"Global inflation pressures are also increasing operational costs in most seafood-producing countries, and could worsen investment access to this sector," it continued.
