Uranium is one of the fuels for nuclear power plants (NPPs).
According to the World Nuclear Association, Kazakhstan was the world's largest uranium producer during the 2012-2021 period.
In 2021, Kazakhstan produced 21,800 tons of uranium, far exceeding other countries, as shown in the graph.
Despite being the largest uranium producer, Kazakhstan has not yet been able to independently produce nuclear energy.
The Kazakh government only intended to develop nuclear energy production in the country in mid-2022, initially learning from France.
"Nuclear power plants will not only help solve the problem of electricity shortages, but will also contribute to the development of low-carbon technology," said Kazakhstan's Deputy Minister of Energy during a visit to France, as reported by *The Astana Times*, Friday (22/7/2022).
