Indonesia's Species Extinction Risk Trend 2018-2022

Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), processed by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), shows that Indonesia's Red-List Index has been declining from 2018 to 2022.

The Red-List Index is a measure of the overall extinction risk of a group of species.

BPS explains that this index has a value range of 0-1 points. A value of 0 means that all species included in the list are extinct. A value of 1 indicates that there is no extinction risk for any species.

In 2018, this extinction index was 0.77 points. This achievement remained unchanged until 2019.

Entering 2020, the index further decreased to 0.76 points. The same figure was recorded in 2021.

The latest data for 2022 shows a decrease to 0.75 points. This means that this decline is getting closer to a value of 0, or extinction.

Previously, Indonesia had lost a very rare species of ray, the Javan stingray ( *Urolophus Javanicus*). According to *Kompas.com*, this extinction was published in the Red List of Threatened Species on December 11, 2023, by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Javan stingray research team was led by Charles Darwin University (CDU), Australia. Julia Constance, a doctoral candidate from CDU and the principal researcher, revealed that the main problem behind the extinction of the Javan stingray is suspected intensive and unregulated fishing.

Constance also assessed that Jakarta Bay, the habitat of the Javan stingray, is a major industrial area, thus having a significant negative impact on the survival of the species, leading to its extinction.
