In Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 7 of 2022, President Jokowi instructed the Ministry of Industry to develop the battery electric vehicle (BEV) industry.

Indonesia has recorded cobalt reserves of 600,000 metric tons, placing it third largest in the world.

However, Indonesia's cobalt production in 2021 was only 2,100 metric tons, far below the 12,000 tons per year needed, as stated by MIND ID.

This indicates that Indonesia needs increased investment and performance in cobalt production to secure the supply for the domestic electric vehicle battery industry.
